Living in Yosemite National Park for 14 years, we were immersed in an unending supply of subject matter for our photography, but setting up a color printing darkroom, with living space at a premium--not to mention the caustic chemicals--was impractical. As a result, we have always relied on remote labs to print our work, with varying degrees of success. For years, we surrendered control of our work to someone else's interpretation and found that regardless of the controls put in place, the potential for variation from print to print--as the light source, paper emulsions and chemistry changed--was a given. With demanding clients like The Ansel Adams Gallery, we couldn't help but cross our fingers and hold our breath as we examined the contents of each new print order. The digital revolution appeared to change all that, providing us with the ability to make the subtle adjustments to tone, hue and saturation ourselves, placing all the artistic decisions in our hands. In late 1997, we cleared a corner in our living space, invested thousands of dollars in compact, environmentally-friendly, high powered computer equipment, calibrated our monitor and proofing devices and dove head first into the digital imaging world with the goal of finally obtaining repeatable, reproducable and predictable results, again and again. We were crushed that the first two labs we sent our Lightjet output to were unable to offer the consistency we knew should be possible. When Calypso Imaging Inc. commenced their Lightjet service, we were aware you were working closely with Bill Atkinson and Joseph Holmes, pioneers of the computer graphics world, and demanding dye transfer masters such as Charles Cramer, to eliminate the variations that plagued the other digital providers. And Calypso has succeeded! As a result, so have we. Our fine print sales have quadrupled in the past year and through our growth, Calypso has kept pace with our growing demands. We relocated to Boise, Idaho in late 1998, yet we might as well be down the street from the lab. Calypso keeps a library of CDs containing our images, presized and profiled for output at the lab so that I can literally place an order, and if necessary, have the print the following day, in Idaho! Add to these qualities competive pricing, bomb-proof shipping and courteous, professional, service and we can't imagine a better arrangement. Keith S.
