Workshop Overview:
Today's travelers have a new companion: their digital camera! Not only do we take our cameras on vacation, but we create images during our daily lives. Photography is one method of communicating, and understanding the process of digital photography can improve our ability to communicate greatly. However, changes to digital technology continue to provide new equipment and challenges to those who create digital images--and that included most of us.
Yet, the challenges can be frustrating if we haven't kept up with the technology. We want to spend our time using this fantastic new technology, not studying it in books or searching the Internet. This class will give travelers the tools they need to use digital photography to make dramatic improvements in the quality of their travel images.
Additionally, we'll discover the tools hidden in our cameras (and not too clearly explained in our camera manuals) that can give us more control over the images we do produce and more confidence in the images we bring home. We'll discuss some basic digital camera language, so we can understand all the hype; we'll discuss several of our digital cameras picture-taking modes; and we'll discover several painless ways to edit and share our images once we return home.
This course is designed for the average person who brings a camera along on a vacation and wants to learn some of the techniques that professional travel photographers use to bring back memorable photographs. You won't become a professional travel photographer after completing this course, but your friends will notice a significant improvement in the images you share with them.
Here are the major topics well discuss in class:
- Special digital camera features and modes
- Basic travel photography composition techniques
- Preparing for the journey and traveling with camera gear
- Ten tips for improving your travel photography
- Tips on how to edit your work after you return home
- New ways to share digital photos with family and friends
This class provides practical advice on selecting equipment, deciding what to bring and how to prepare, and choosing how to share your images once you return home. You don't need to own a digital camera to benefit from this class. In fact, you will see a variety of cameras during the class, so you'll also have more information about the different models and features of these cameras, which can make the purchase of your next camera easier.
Travel photography can serve several purposes for us. The world really is becoming smaller. Television, airplanes, and the Internet have greatly accelerated our opportunity to see the world. Yet, we travel to experience it for ourselves. In one sense, discovering a new corner of the world is a way of making it real and proving that we were there. In another sense, our travels take us to locations that inspire us and unleash our creativity. If we are comfortable with the process of digital photography, we can relax and allow our curiosity and creativity to take us to new places, places we can share with others by sharing our images.
