Workshop Overview:

Our three-day, hands-on course covers the fundamentals of a digital workflow. RAW capture, importing and cataloging with Lightroom/Bridge, RAW adjustments, editing in Photoshop, and digital printing and web publishing. This course is aimed at the serious hobbyists and serious amateur photographers who want to learn “best practices” for editing and managing their digital photography libraries.

Topics covered will include:

  • Importing and organizing photographs
  • The selection/rejection process
  • Applying edits in Lightroom
  • Lightroom as a cataloging tool
  • Using Photoshop to make local changes using selections, adjustment layers, and masks
  • Sharpening workflow
  • High-level look at scripting for automation on the Macintosh
  • Overview of color management
  • Noise reduction software choices and the best ways to get the most out of high ISO photos
  • Using automation to speed your workflow
  • Preparing files for print, either at home or through a service
  • Preparing files for the web

Some of the specific Lightroom features we'll talk about are:

  • Labels, tags, folders, collections, virtual copies, and stacks
  • Rotating, cropping, spot removal, and sharpening
  • Black and white conversion, tone curves, and split tone
  • Exporting, export presets, and scripting for the Macintosh
  • and more!

Photoshop features we'll cover include:

  • Making selections and masks
  • Creating and using adjustment layers
  • Different approaches to image sharpening
  • Artistic effects and tasteful use of filters
  • and more!

The focus of this course is organization, workflow, and non-destructive editing for the beginner to intermediate digital photographer.

This class will have two instructors and only 12 students. It will be very hands on, and you will receive a lot of individual attention.

You are asked to bring digital files to this workshop, preferably in a camera RAW format (JPEGs will also work). Throughout the 3 days of the class, you will be importing, editing, and printing your own photos.

Students attending this workshop will also have the opportunity to print on either Lightjet or Epson large-format printers. Calypso Imaging is one of the top print labs in the country and you will find the quality of printing to be among the best. Students in this workshop will be able to print one 16×20 photograph for free and may print as many photographs as they wish for standard Calypso rates while working with the instructors and knowledgeable Calypso staff.
