Overview:
We see frequent articles promising improved photographs if we’ll just visit a new location or buy new camera equipment and accessories. Yet, when we put away our newest camera and download our hundreds of new images, our results still aren’t quite what we hoped they’d be. During this intensive weekend exploration we’ll concentrate on two key skills to enhance your photographic success: composition and editing.
Curriculum & Format:
Although we photographers must be concerned with equipment and technique, sometimes we forget that photography is a means of self-expression that involves one crucial element above all others: composition. Not only is composition critically important but editing with skill and purpose can continue you on the road to success as a photographer. On Saturday, we’ll concentrate on composition, an on-going area of concern for all photographers. You will learn basic design elements to improve compositional techniques, and then we will apply what we have learned in a field session. Our review of these elements, through viewing images and analysis of their creation, will aid our understanding and application of these important concepts.
On Sunday, we will have a group critique of our previous day’s work, and then you will learn basic rules for editing: what to keep and why you keep it. Barbara will demonstrate a procedure she has developed through many years of experience in her photographic business and through editing projects for several National Geographic photographers. You will then practice editing techniques with your own work for the remainder of the day. If you are considering selling your work, this is the perfect time to learn the skills to make a market smart submission to editors. Even if you are not interested in marketing your work, your new-found editing skills will help you manage the abundance of images lurking in various folders on your computer’s hard drive or in film boxes in your closet.
Your understanding of composition will expand, your editing will proceed more efficiently, and you will find yourself approaching your own photography with renewed excitement and a fresh perspective after you participate in this enlightening workshop.
